
RETREAT HOUSE
Students are required to design a retreat studio in response to the given client (Jalaini Abuhassan) and a real site (Hutan Bandar).
TWO spaces required in the building:

Working space: studio, gallery and storerooms

Living space: living room, dining, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms

Design a retreat studio that Jai's can spread his interaction towards his family and the nature in the surrounding.

concept
The set of arrangement of canvas drawings in Jai's studio. The main picture is placed in the middle whereas the side pictures are arranged beside the bed.

The secondary separator (Curving Plane) represents the characteristic of Jai. The existing of this curving stone wall enhance the looking besides acting as a space separator. It divides the whole design into two spaces: open space and private space.

The main separator (Contrast) acts as a separator to divide the whole design into two sides: the art side and the living side.

materials
Concrete is highly durable and can withstand a wide range of weather conditions. It is one of the materials that can integrate with the nature due to its colour and unique surface texture.

Stones can be used to build load bearing wall due to its strong particle composition and its natural texture. In fact, its unique surface texture enables it to create a contrast point in the design.

Black painted steel is used to manufacture railing, the frame of the timber louvers, windows and doors to create a sense that it is a strong material.
Timber creates a warm colour and surface texture which enhances the harmony looking of the design. It is an insulator which will not absorb a lot of heat and it is quick to build.
