Johor Bahru's Issue

Picture1.png

It is found out that Johor Bahru city centre becoming a doughnut city that facing the issue its surrounding becomes transient after the working hour. The happening of these problems is due to the relocation of the local CIQ. The consequences of these problems lead the travellers to bypass the city, causing the city's remaining populations are the lower rung of social ladder.

The diagram below provided by ThinkCity shows the difference in between the total numbers of jobs and the number of populations. The results shows the total number of job is far higher than the local population.

On the other hand, based on the local static activities diagram done by the urban group- New Spirit team, the results show that the human traffic is concentrated at the bustling heritage area. The flow of human traffic is being pulled towards the heritage area from the CIQ, leaving the other side to be not well maintained. it caused the place to be isolated, the people afraid of passing through the district.

Design

Inspiration

The concept is inspired by the old Malay Kampung's houses in Johor. The behaviour of the community is studied by carrying out content analysis to analyse the designed main space in each house. It is found out that most of the spaces in Malay houses function for gathering purposes. This is why the relationship between the people in the old Malay community is so close. As a result, creating a public space for gathering purposes is effective in attracting people and prolong their activities to be happen in the place.

Concept

Picture8.jpg

The main thinking on reclaiming local population is by creating an urban village in the Johor Bahru city centre.  Privately own public spaces (POPS) are introduced in each separated village to serve as a place that allows local people to carry out static activities. This creates opportunities to link people from one place to the other place. As a result, the upgraded comfortability and the living quality causes human traffic to be spread. This helps create a more vibrant and safer city for the local citizens and the travellers.
