Timelessness

Past .  Present . Future

The challenge of this competition is to redesign and reinvent the present conventional longhouse design to include modern & practical improvements to suit the present-day leading into the future.

META represents metabolism architecture, symbolise built environment that is self-sustained and capable to be evolved to accommodate population growth and demands. It reflects the commune in Sarawak Longhouse that grows "longer" as the population increase, residing multiple families under a roof. The idea of living under the same "Atap" forms a strong communal sense among the longhouse community - to share, play and connect, shaping the culture of unity among the Sarawakians.

The proposal of the future longhouse associate metabolism adaptive concept into the idea of "Atap" inspired by the spirit of the community under one roof in Sarawak longhouse.

Redefine the rood as the main element for adaptability and expandability. Not only functions as a shelter but also the major part of the longhouse ecosystem by integrating advanced technologies and self-sustained systems for the community living under, leading longhouse dwellers into the future lifestyle. To reinvent and innovate by including new functions and programmes to form a self-sustained ecosystem under the roof.

Hence, enhancing the symbol of the roof by adding value to its purpose through creating a high efficient and time-proof design to ensure the existence of longhouse community spirit

A set of longhouse will be equipped with 2 commune decks module and a Metabolic station at the centre as the core supply. Living quarters can be expanded on both sides until a maximum of 8 units. So families on both sides of the core will have to work together to sustain the core in order to supply their needs.
